A revolution in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

Pay attention to prostatic artery embolization; PAE!

Prostate artery embolization has become a major treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, which is the biggest problem for middle-aged men. Prostate arterial embolization, which minimizes side effects and improves the therapeutic effect, is expected to open a new paradigm for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia in the future.

Benign prostate hyperplasia that should be careful with age

What is benign prostate hyperplasia?

As the size of the prostate that surrounds the urethra grows larger, it gives pressures on urethra, and therefore it causes the urinary tract to narrow down, leading to a dysuria.

What causes benign prostatic hyperplasia?

The exact cause of enlarged prostate has not been found yet. However, the most common cause is the male hormone imbalance due to aging of the urogenital organ. Prostate hyperplasia, which is often thought to be a geriatric disease, has recently been on the increase in young people in their 30s and 40s. This is because of a westernization of diet and an increasing number of patients suffering from metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, blood pressure, obesity, etc.

Benign prostate hyperplasia that ruins daily life (Symptoms)

1) Frequent urination  2) It takes a long time to urinate.  3) Even after urination, there is a feeling of residual urine.  4) Hard to tolerate urine  5) Urinate more than once during sleep

Importance of prompt treatment when there are symptoms of enlarged prostate

Medication: There are alpha blockers to relieve tension of the prostate muscles to help urine discharge, and hormone suppressants that prevent prostate enlargement by reducing hormone secretion. However, if these medications have no effects on the symptom improvement, there are side effects of medicine or persistent hematuria, surgery should be performed.

Surgical treatment: 1) Transurethral Prostatic Resection(TURP): The endoscope is inserted through the urethra and used to remove the enlarged prostate tissue using special instruments attached to the endoscope in order to make narrowed urethra widen.

2) KTP Laser Surgery: It widens urethra by burning prostate tissue with high temperature of the laser through the endoscope.

3) Holmium Laser Surgery: It removes the entire prostate from the body by separating the space between outermost membrane surrounding the prostate and enlarged prostate.

Prostate artery embolization recognized as a new medical technology by the government

Prostate artery embolization is performed by inserting a catheter with a diameter of 0.6 mm into the femoral artery to find the artery to the prostate and injecting the embolic material and blocking the blood vessels in order to treat patients having symptoms related to the abnormal urination.

Advantages: 1) No need for general anesthesia  2) No surgical wound  3) Short length of hospital stay and quick return to daily life  4) Few complications such as sexual dysfunction and retrograde ejaculation

International St. Mary’s hospital will actively introduce these advanced surgical methods and will implement it in the lead. Coordination of the medical staffs of each department and accurate diagnosis of the urologist are required to find the optimal method for the patient and obtain satisfactory surgery results without recurrence or side effects.
